JUNIORS

This week the Junior riders concentrated on team riding skills, to improve confidence riding in bunches. The club welcomed new junior member, James Hampshire onboard.  James is pictured above with U19 Elite member and FRF sponsored rider Robbie Cater and some of the other RBCC juniors.

THANK YOU:

Thanks to our Commissaires Richard Jenkins & Jenny Spurgeon.  Thanks to Janette Murdoch who conducted Juniors.   Thanks to our safety marshals including Tony Horneman who also cleaned the track of debris and Richard Jenkins who deployed & retrieved all the witches hats.

REPORT

Josh Marden again narrowly missed taking out the 36km A-Grade race at Heffron Park on Saturday 3 April 2004.  Like last week, Marden was beaten by the King of Heffron Park - Anthony Spurgeon (Caravello).  Third place went to Matthew Lucas. Left, "The King" is flanked by speed skating stars, Josh Marden and Matt Lucas.  Some mean looking thighs on that A Grade podium.  Perhaps Spurge was a star on the ice in his younger years as well.  With these 3 sprinters going for it, the endurance stars, Pete "The Machine" Macdonald and Robbie "Pursuit" Cater, were relegated to 4th and 5th places respectively.

Here's Robbie sucking in the big ones.  That's the same look he gets when he's doing a 3000 metre pursuit on the track.

Left, "The Machine" doing what he loves.  Feeling the wind on his chest.  Personally I have an aversion to that feeling - JB

Also mixing it in A grade is our fearless vets.  Mark " The Slapper" Robertson putting that 10 speed Dura-Ace through it's paces, with Big Roger Crawford hot on his wheel.

In B grade, it was good to see Ross Mackay (Randwick Botany) return to the podium to score second place behind Sam Carrol.  Third and fourth places went to Daniel Vanolini (Steam/Eastern Suburbs) and Richard Dodds (Sydney) respectively.

Left, Daniel Vanolini gets a small break off the front of B grade.  Richard Westmoreland in his first B grade ride tries to chase him down.  Further back in the green kit, Dr Bob Hampshire sits in closely followed by

Frank Fortuna on his wheel with brother Rocky never too far behind. Lucky last as (nearly) always is Andy Matthews. Andy and I often battle over this position but he got it easily on this occasion as I was up at the velodrome for the Clarence St Cup( - JB).

In C Grade, it's good to see Alan Cohen back racing.  Left, Alan puts the Merckx through it's paces.

Arthur Driver (Penrith Panthers), left, and Adam Sheppard (Sydney) were the stars of C-Grade with a breakaway early in the race.

Driver and Sheppard fought out a sprint for first and second place with Andrew Hall (Randwick Botany) third.

FRF regular, Laura Bortolozzi drives the peleton as they try to get the escapees.

D Grade action with Guy Bicknell obviously enduring the pain barrier to crack a smile for photographer, Tony Horneman.

E grade action and with the first 3 place getters staying close to the front. Joe Gatt
