Lidcombe Auburn Track Carnival & the NSW Omnium Championships
(held at Dunc Gray Velodrome on Saturday 2 & Sunday 3 February 2002)

Saturday Night 2nd February, 2002 saw two of our up and coming juniors in Luke and Jonathon Cridland and one of our Seniors, Dean Preddy, particpate in the Lidcombe Auburn Cycling Club Track Carnival at Dunc Gray Velodrome.

Luke gained a 6th and 4th placing and Jono a fourth placing on the night.  Dean gave a creditable performance in the Men's events.

Good going guys.

On Sunday 3rd February, 2002 the NSW State Omnium Championships were held at the Dunc Gray velodrome.  Four Randwick Botany members  (2 Junior and 2 Master 3/4) competed in events over this long 10 hour day.  An Omnium is an event where the participants need to ride 4 disciplines and place in at least some of these to gain points towards the final overall placings.

It is a grueling event as they are sitting around for some time between races and this can be quite a nerve raking experience and with a 170 entries start list on the day from U15 division thru U19 Juniors, Men, Women and Masters 1/2 thru to 5+ you need to have great patience and concentration.

The Time Trials with this many entries started at 10am and continued until 1pm.

Mark Woodhouse was the first to compete in the U15 division time trial , then Luke in U17 division but our two Masters 3/4 in Chris White and Ken Woodhouse did not compete until 11.30am.

Luke placed 6th NSW rider in this first event with Chris White gaining 2nd place with a 39.225 time for 500m.

Then came the Derby with Chris getting a second in his heat and thus being the only one getting straight through to the Semi's.  Mark, Luke and Ken rode the repercharge for a second chance to get through to the semi's but unfortunately missed out.

After the Derby Finals we came to the elimination races and then the scratch events.

Overall placing saw Chris White just missing out tying with five points and on a count back as is the case in these events placing 4th overall.

All our riders rode well in this event and we must congratulate then all for participating on the day.
