NSW Criterium Championships Sat 29 June
& St George Junior Open Sun 30 June.
The NSW Criterium Championships were conducted for Under 13's to Under
17's at the Dunc Gray Criterium Circuit on Saturday 29 June 2002. It was
another weekend of "Winning Ways" for Randwick Botany Cycling Club and the Newington
Inn.
This report from our Junior Development Officer, Peter Zala:
The NSW Junior criterium championships were held on the Dunc Grey
Criterium Circuit. The tight circuit suited the the track riders which showed in
most races.
Adriano Maradini represented the club in the U/11 events. U/15 & 17 heats,
Pita Vea and Robbie Cater both qualify for finals in their heats.
The afternoon started with the U13 boys. Tamas Bykerk rode a hard
race finding the corners hard to keep the speed up ( basically the whole squad
had this problem) Tamas was outsprinted again to finish 7th overall from around
20 starters. Max Gueniev finished in the second bunch only moments behind.
The U/15 boys rode fast and had many spurges. The pack was broken up half way
througth the race into 3 groups. Pita Vea kept with the front pack and rode
well. He finished in the sprint but was unable to place.
The U/17 womens race had no breakaways the track riders were easily able to keep
pace with the roadies and consequently Brit & Robyn only managed to finish with
the bunch, contesting the sprint but being outdone by the trackies, winner was
Jacqueline Kedja.
U/17 men and Robbie and I made the decision on thursday night to take part in
the race and then have a few more days off as he is still recovering from the
flu. The race was really fast with Luke picton SCC making a breakaway from the
word go. Robbie's instructions were to follow Dean Windsor everywhere and if
Dean didn't go then he wasn't to either. Yipee Robbie is actually learning
and this week was his turn to place. However Robbie and Dean did make a
breakaway during the race which lasted for about 5 laps and then they mingled
back in with the group. On the last lap Robbie had positioned himself perfectly
next to Dean just on the outside, when they hit the last corner Dean cut the
boys inside of him making them brake and leaving Dean and Robbie to have a lead
out for the finish line. By this time Robbie was totally spent and had no energy
left. He did attempt a sprint and was right in there but Tyler Hamilton
came from behind and just got Robbie on the line with only the video camera to
seperate them.
