Masters State Road Championships at Wagga Wagga on 28 September 2002.

Ron Sproule took the Silver medal in the Masters 8 division over 25 kilometres and Tony Caruana took Bronze in the Masters 6 division over 50 kilometres.  Congratulations guys.

REPORT

Ron Sproule, Vet 8, and Tony Caruana, Vet 6, took part on a very chilly and windy Saturday morning. Vet 8 were combined with Vet 7 as initially there were only two Vet 8s. However, unbeknown to Ron at least 3 more Vet 8s joined on the line, thus constituting a separate race within the  race. Ron kept up with the Vet 7s all the way till just before the crest of  the first hill. The rest of the Vet 8s were with him, as too were some of the Vet 7s.  Over the crest, Ron surged to bridge the gap with the Vet 7s. He caught some of the stragglers, but in doing so dragged across some of the Vet  8s. The bunch he was with, finished without a sprint, and Ron casually  rode in with second place awarded to him after the race. There was no doubt  that had he known the Vet 8s were a separate race, his recent form at Hefron  would have shown he could have easily claimed first place in a finishing sprint.

Tony Caruana, in Vet 6, rode with the bunch till the hill. Here he  managed to keep to the front, tailing Jimmy Ryan (Panther)and  Rodger Doughtie (Vic). Jimmy surged over the top, and when Tony changed from the small  chain wheel to the big one his chain came off. With a delicate maneuver of  gear leavers the chain was properly relocated and then he sprinted over the  twenty metre gap created by Jimmy Ryan, and surged past to drag Jimmy and  Rodger with him, causing a big break in the field. The three riders maintained  that break to the finish, and even though Tony tried to drop the  other two at the final 300 metre mark, they hung on tenaciously until Jimmy and  Rodger rolled him on the line. But Tony was happy with third, seeing it was one of the first Open races in the past 5 years.

Thanks to Tony Caruana for the report.
