REPORT
Prior to the start of the Randwick Botany Cycling Club Criterium race at
Heffron Park at Maroubra on 7 April 2001, over 50 riders, plus officials
and spectators observed 1 minute silence to commemorate the death of
former President and Junior Development Officer, Mr Keith Harris.
Keith passed away on 1 April 2001 and was a long time supporter of the
club and the NSW Cycling Federation. He was
involved in all aspects of the sport, including junior development.
One of the junior riders, Josh Kersten, who he introduced to the Randwick
Botany Cycle Club, went on to win a Junior World Championships title in
1994."
Graham Betts, held out to win an exciting sprint in the combined A and B
Grade 38km event, ahead of Ross Mackay and Ken Johnston, from the Hunter
Valley Cycling Club.
Dean Preddy tried to break away from the 17-rider C Grade pack with 8km to
go, in the 30km event. Dean was quickly caught by the pack but at
the 3km to go mark, Wayne Goold tried his luck with a strong breakaway.
Wayne maintained a slender lead to win by only 10 metres. Dean
Preddy ended up in second place and Shaun Ballesty, third.
Herve Boutin won the 20km D Grade race, followed by Ron Sproule and Neil
Morris.
Seven junior riders, including Keegan Aitchinson, Luke Davison, Max
Gueniev, Adriano Maradini, Nicholas Mellick, Thom Richards and James Warne
competed in a time trial and criterium race. Juniors are showing
good progress, all improving on their personal best times around the tight
Heffron Park circuit.
There will be no club racing over the Easter weekend. The next
Randwick Botany Cycling Club race will be conducted at Heffron Park on
Saturday 21 April 2001. Juniors start at 1pm and Seniors 2.30pm.
