REPORT
Chris Rule set the pace in the A grade event at the weekly
Randick Botany Cycling Club race held at Heffron Park, Maroubra on
Saturday 25 August 2001. A
high-speed bunch sprint to the line saw Rule passed by David Stewart to
claim first place in a time of 55 minutes 35 seconds, at an average speed
over the 36km of nearly 40kmh. Third
place went to Gerry Brophy followed close behind by Tony Iannacito.
The 15-rider 32km B Grade race featured a spectacular 4-rider
breakaway comprising two Randwick Botany riders and two Eastern Suburbs
Cycling Club riders. Kirk
Purchase, from Easts, broke away early in the race, but was chased by
Randwick Botany riders Chris White and Clive Hammerson.
With 8km to go another Easts rider, John McKenzie joined the trio
and the 4 riders worked together to maintain a 500m lead over the field. Hammerson led out in the final sprint, but Purchase and
McKenzie stormed home to claim first and second place, respectively.
Hammerson was third just ahead of Chris White.
The winning time was 50 minutes 26 seconds.
Brad Lane and Robert Dickerson established a 200m breakaway half
way through the 24km C Grade race and maintained the lead to claim first
and second place respectively. An
exciting bunch sprint for third place followed, with Easts rider Frank
Conceicao proving too strong for the remaining 12 riders.
Jeffrey Ginns finished just out of the placings.
The winning time was 47 minutes 52 seconds.
Junior rider Michael Murdoch broke away in the first lap of the
20km D Grade event, and rode solo to the finish line in a time of 35
minutes 45 seconds. Murdoch’s
average speed was an impressive 34kmh, considering he rode the entire race
on his own. Matthew Tabone
rode well back in the D Grade bunch and claimed seconds place ahead of
Paul Baker. Allan Abeni finished fourth.
The E Grade race was conducted over 16km with Andrew Pike
claiming first place in a time of 33 minutes 47 seconds. Norman Jew was seconds with David Calleja third.
Seventy-two-year-old Kevin Blanchfield finished fourth.
Fourteen junior riders lined up for two events starting with a
2km Time Trial which was won by Michael Murdoch, with Chris Young second
and Mark Woodhouse third. The
10km Junior Handicap race was also won by Michael Murdoch with his brother
Thomas Murdoch second and Chris Young third.
