REPORT
The rain held off long enough for Randwick Botany Cycling Club to hold
it's first race after the Easter break on Saturday 21 April 2001, at
Heffron Park, Maroubra.
Nicos Demetriou, from Cyprus, broke away after only 3km, in the 32km A
Grade race. Demetriou maintained a slender 20sec lead over the A
grade bunch until the halfway mark when the bunch regrouped. Paul
Rowney from Eastern Suburbs Cycling Club attacked several times in the
second half of the race only to be pipped-at-the-post by Demetriou in an
exciting sprint. Third
place went to Anthony Spurgeon from the Caravello Joinery Cycling Team.
The winning time was 47 minutes 15 seconds at an average speed of 39.5
km/h.
Ten riders contested the B Grade event over 28km and averaged a steady
38.5km/h throughout the race. John Kenny from Eastern Suburbs Club
claimed first place followed by David McAlpin representing Sydney Cycling
Club and David Stewart from Randwick Botany Club.
Matthew Lucas is a short course speed ice skater and also races for
Randwick Botany Cycling Club (RBCC). Matthew says that cycling
complements his speed skating training. He won the 24km C grade race
at an average speed of 37km/h, with Fenton Moran second and Ben Thomson
third, both from RBCC.
'D' Grade was won by Chris Sroka from Waratah Veterans. Second was
Alan Sumner from Dulwich Hill Club. Third place was claimed by Neil
Morris from RBCC.
There was no junior racing due to the wet conditions earlier in the day.
The next Randwick Botany Cycling Club race will be conducted at Heffron
Park on Saturday 28 April 2001. Juniors start at 1pm and Seniors
2.30pm. A special time trail event and BBQ will be conducted on
Sunday 29 April 2001at Heffron Park starting at 10.00am. Affiliated
