CONGRATULATIONS
PETE McDONALD ROBBIE CATER & MATT LUCAS
Congratulation to Pete McDonald winner of this
year's Tour of the Murray. Congratulations
to Robbie Cater (far right) who has placed
second in this years Grafton to Inverell Classic
Road Race. Robbie was away in a 2 man
break for over 100 kilometres with former
winner, fellow team mate and RBCC member, Pete
"The Machine" McDonald pictured second from the
right. Great result for Randwick Botany in
general with 4 RBCC riders in the top 12,
including Robbie Cater, Shaun Higgerson, Pete
Hertzig and Peter McDonald. Found this
picture of the boys on the podium at Heffron on
11 August which very conveniently had all three
of them in it.
Congratulations to Matt Lucas (far left), now a
Master, who stayed home and took out the
Southern Hemisphere Cup at Eastern Creek.
MAGPIE SOLUTIONS
Further to our Magpie Alert below, I have
received several solutions from members which
may be of assistance. Firstly, they
generally target single riders so you are pretty
safe in a bunch or even 2 abreast.
One
of our members Andrew Swan reports:
"Early this year I stuck a pair of those
"goggle" eyes on the back of my helmet to
dissuade swooping. These are the ones you stick
on toys, with a black "pupil" that can rattle
around. I've not been bothered by birds since,
in a total 400km of riding! :-) I had to
hunt around for them though, eventually getting
them at the craft shop on the top level of
Eastgardens for about $2 each."
Ritchie Jenkins has a pair of sunglasses stuck
on the back of his helmet which has some degree
of success however whilst riding with him the
other day, he almost had the lenses pecked out.
Rocky
Fortuna has submitted a possible solution.
He reckons you get two large electrical
electrical cable ties and pull them tight
through the top of your helmet so that
they stick up in the air. Rocky reckons
the birds will attack the tops of the cables and
miss your helmet. I would give a lot of
credence to this last one given that Rocky
spends much of a training ride OTA by himself
and therefore if anyone is going to be attacked
by magpies it would be him.
Maybe
a combination of the two with Rocky's cable ties
and Andrew's google eyes or you could simply
stop like Big Bazza did the other day and try
and KO one with your water bottle. He
missed him three times whilst the predator
perched and stared at Bazza from the Electric
power lines. For this last method you need
to be both a good shot and not too far from home
if your thirsty.
MAGPIE ALERT
For all those doing secret miles by yourself or in
pairs, be advised that the Magpies are nesting and are
particularly aggressive this year. You are pretty
safe in a bunch but a single rider is like a red flag to
a bull. There are a pair working at the top of
Torrington Road Maroubra. There are a pair working
at Heffron Park that nearly tore a guys remote control
plane to pieces last week and getting hit by the
propellor, whilst it drew blood, did not deter them.
There is one, possibly two along the stretch from
Duffy's corner on Bunnerong Road to the Gaol and a nasty
one at the Container terminals. Ritchie Jenkins
has had some success with a pair of sunglasses turned
backward. I did read an American report that said
you can get rid of them completely by pasting a face on
the top of your helmet from a magazine or the like.
Don't know if you want to go that far however I can tell
you from personal experience that the one at Torrington
Road ruined one of my helmets last year when he stuck
his beak right in causing 5 big holes through the
polystyrene shell. If he had gone about 30 mm
lower he would have been into the side of my head!!
Congratulations
Tanya Newton
Congratulations to
Tanya Newton who won a Silver Medal in the
Womens NSW Road Championships at Kurrajong on 19
August 2007. See full results
here.
The 2007 Snow Wilson Memorial which was
scheduled to be held on 8 September 2007 at
Heffron Park has been cancelled. When only
6 riders had entered within 6 days of the
closing date, the Randwick Botany Executive
received a clear message that riders had little
interest in this Open and we were unfortunately
left with no other option but to cancel the
Open. We apologise to the six riders
who had actually entered. The date will
now revert back to a normal club racing day.
CLUB PATRON
REPORTS POST TOUR DE FRANCE
In his
Aug report Mike Tomalaris, RBCC Club Patron
gives his thoughts post Tour and pulls no
punches on the "Shock Jocks"back home in
Australia trying to heap discredit on our
beloved sport.
If you are in, or planning to go to Victoria in
October then why not support this worthy event.
Full details
here.
HEFFRON PARK
IMPROVEMENT
I
would like to thank Randwick Council and
especially the Randwick Council Sports Committee
for confirmation at last night's meeting (15
August), that requested fencing alongside the
soccer fields (in the vicinity of the public
toilets) has been approved and will be erected
in a couple of weeks. Hopefully no more
soccer balls under wheels and/or soccer players
running out in front of cyclists.
CONGRATULATIONS BLACK FAMILY
Congratulations Kevin & Lindsay on the birth
of baby daughter Eva Grace who was born on 8
August. Little sister to Olivia and Liam.
Mother and Baby doing well and apparently Dad
pretty proud as well.
Rocky Recovers !!
For those of you who don't know, our own Rocky
"Rockstar" Fortuna was struck by a car on
Tuesday morning 8 May. His superior
athletic metabolism combined with the healing
powers of about 100 kilos of Italian pasta and
virgin olive oil, had him cast off his bandages
and the picture on the right was taken just 4
days later on the 12th May. Panel Beaters
assure us that the car will be back on the road
in about another week.
As soon as he gets a new bike he will be back
out there. He is having a hard time
choosing between an Argon18, BH or a Colnago.

RBCC's NEW CLUB
PATRON, MIKE TOMALARIS
It is my great
pleasure to introduce to you Randwick Botany Cyling Clubs' new
Club Patron, although to the vast majority of you I'm sure that
he needs no introduction. We have remained rivited to our
seats over the years as we have watched Michael Tomalaris bring
the Tour de France and other major cycling events into our homes
via the SBS coverage. We all know of his obvious passion
for the sport of cycling but what is not common knowledge about
Michael, is that he is also a rider, and in fact one of our club
mates being a fully affiliated member of the Randwick Botany
Cycling Club. Well without stealing any more of Tomo's
thunder I will hand it over to him for the first installment of
our
Patron's page.
RBCC SALUTES
PARIS-ROUBAIX WINNER STUART O'GRADY
I'm sure you agree that Stuart O'Grady's wonderful victory
at last Sunday's Paris-Roubaix will go down as one of the
great performances by an Australian on the European
professional cycling circuit.
Stuey conquered the "Hell of the North" in fine style.
Well, due to popular demand, SBS will screen a one hour
highlights package this Sunday from 11am. So set the video
recorder and tell all your friends.

fitness, but considering the entry list we snared 3 Bronze,
1 Silver & 1 Gold. Congratulations guys....more

Our previous offsite housed

have introduced a new one which is housed on the RBCC

ability to upload photos and leave smileys etc.

October 2006. Entries close Sun 15 October
This years
Snowy Wison Memorial has been run and won. a very
successful day yet again and enjoyed by all.
Congratulations girls. Guys, take a collective
smack over the knuckles. At least the girls saw
that RBCC got one team in the State Team Time Trial,
flew the flag and enjoyed themselves to boot
Congratulations to Mel McDonald, Laura Bortoluzzi, Bebe
Adams and Emma James
A fantastic ride with about
50 members taking on the Gorges. Here we are, all
crambed onto the punt across Berowra Waters. All
except Graham Ferguson that is, who was too slow coming
down the hill and missed it. No problems, we
waited for Graham at the top of the climb.
Congratulations

Little Matilda Dalton was born this morning
(Monday 11 September) at
7:30am. Matilda weighed in at 3.73kgs.

this sound James.

PHOTO OF NATHAN PAGE EARNS AWARD
The photo of Nathan Page (left),
was taken by Elizabeth Goff at Parramatta Park in
June 2005. The event was the Parramatta Open. This
photo was evaluated by Professor Des Crawley of
Western Sydney Uni & recently awarded with a merit
award at club level being the highest award.
Elizabeth, who's son is a member
of the Parramatta Cycling Club, is a member of the
Hills Camera Club. The club has regular
outings to various events to improve their skills.
Nathan caught Elizabeth's eye because he projected
the essence of the cyclist. His facial expression,
the veins pumping, the muscles taut ,every ounce of
his energy showing. Elizabeth has prepared a
poster size version which will be presented to
Nathan in the near future. Congratulations to
both Elizabeth and Nathan.

Bikebug North Training Ride
Aug 13
RBCC Bikebug North Ride was
another big success with good
numbers, plenty of punctures and
everyone commented on how good
the weather was for the day.
We were all shown the advantages
of Clinchers over
Tubulars
for training rides, and that
quick re-glue happened at the
ideal place “Bobbo’
service station” because it gave
some of us plenty of time to
refuel to get up the next Gorge…
All in all great ride, perfect
day, loved it.

RBCC CLUB
CHAMPIONSHIP UPDATE
The decision was made to abandon day one of the 2 day tour at
Heffron on Saturday 15 July 2006. Despite the torrential
rain, there was significant ponding in some of the corders and
the track surface was like glass. It was considered that
Stage 1, being a one lap "all in" handicap, would be a recipe
for disaster. With everyone's safety and best interest in
mind, the decision to abandon day 1 was made. Stage 4
however was held at Eastern Creek the following day,
Sunday 16 July 2006....results
here.
Whilst the Road race is a championship in its own right, we will
still look to running the other three stages in the near future.
In other words, the 2 day tour will still go on however not over
a single weekend. The winner of the Eastern Creek stage,
Ben Tur-Hunne, will wear
the "Yellow Jersey" to the start of the yet to be scheduled,
Stage 2. The overall point score has been updated and it
can be seen here.
NEXT CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP INCLUDES EASTERN CREEK RACEWAY
As part of our annual 2 day tour, Eastern Creek circuit has been
booked for our club exclusive use on Sunday 16 July (more
details in coming events).
This is a world class race circuit. Your club provides
this venue to its members free of charge. There is
significant expense in these fabulous venues such as Eastern
Creek, the International Regatta Centre and the International
Western Dragway. All we ask is for your attendance.
Last year we were the biggest club in the state but can only
manage 29 riders at an international venue. This is very
disappointing and on a personal note, quite unbelievable.
Please support your club championship, support your club but
most of all have a great time at one of the best race tracks in
the world FOR FREE. Please attend !!! Tell Joanne,
our secretary if you are coming.
Congratulations Frank & Natasha Caristo
Look how happy & proud Frank looks at the birth
of his son Xavier Domenic who was born at 7.55pm
on Monday 5 June, weighing in at 8lbs.
Actually this is a photo of Frank winning D
grade on 29 April but we reckon he's probably
just as happy and proud about young Xavier. RBCC wishes Frank and family all the best from
your clubmates at RBCC.

CONGRATULATIONS JOSH MARDEN
RBCC member Josh Marden as
part of the FRF Couriers - Caravello UCI team has taken
out stage 3 of the
FBD Insurance RÁS'.
The FBD Insurance RÁS'is an eight day staged cycle raceorganised
in Ireland since 1953. The event has been formally
known as the 'Ras Tailteann' and is sometimes referred
to abroad as the 'Rás' or 'Tour of Ireland'
Stage winner Joshua Marden
said: “It was tough, given the conditions and
the wind, but that is the same for everybody.
Everybody has to do it,” he said. “We studied
the finish the night before and I knew that if I
was in a break, I had a good chance being a
sprinter. So that is how it worked out. I had
two guys in the break to help me, they could
shelter me most of the day and then coming into
the finish, they were able to lead it out for
me.”
“I will try again
this week, if it comes down to a sprint we have
a very good chance because we are a strong
sprinting team. Myself and another guy are good
finishers.”
