GET WELL SOON ADRIANO MARADINI
Bad Luck for Adriano Maradini
who competed in the Commonwealth Bank Central Coast Track Open Carnival
on Sat 4 December at the Adcock Park Velodrome, West Gosford. Adriano
was involved in a collision and his bike tumbled over a downed rider.
As a result Adriano has broken his collarbone. I know how you feel
Adriano! He is a little disappointed but was in good spirits when
I spoke to him on Sun morning. We wish him a speedy recovery.

A great turn out of the
Juniors and their parents.
Every Junior received a
prize. Our Major prize
winners were Ben Elliot who
was presented with the
Malabar RSL Encouragement
Award and Luke Davision and
Tom Patton who each took out
Major Achievement awards for
a great year not the least
of which was a silver medal
in the National Pairs Road
Team Time Trial.
Congratulations also to the
new RBCC Club Person of the
Year, Janette Murdoch, who
was rather surprised and a
little misty, but most
deserving of the award.

BUCKO ON THE MEND
I (Club President John Buckton)
wish to thank everyone for
their kind thoughts and the
steady stream of visitors
who visited me in the
hospital. Thanks to
the club for the lovely
flowers which made me feel a
whole lot better. I
have undergone surgery and
my collarbone feels much
better now that the pieces
are pinned together.
For those of you who don't
know on Thursday morning 11
Nov, I was brought down by a
car on Southern Cross Drive
returning from the Cronulla
Colluzi training ride with a
bunch of about 50 cyclists.
I hit the ground hard and
broke 5 ribs, punctured my
lung and shattered my
collarbone. Whilst I
am still very sore I am keen
to get back on the horse
that threw me (eventually).
The good news is that I am
typing again and therefore
the website might now start
to be updated a little more
regularly. Thanks
again to everyone for your
well wishes. ---

Classic
This Sunday,
21st November, is the
Johnny Warren Jamberoo Classic.
For those riders leaving
from the Eastern Suburbs,
the Randwick Botany bunch
will leave the Randwick
gates of Centennial Park
strictly at 6.00 am which
will get us to the
start at Loftus before 7.30
am. The ride has been dedicated to
the memory of soccer great
Johnny Warren. There is a
$10 entry fee and all proceeds
will be donated to the Sydney
Cancer Foundation. The ride will
be recorded by SBS crew for
presentation on the SBS show,
Cycling Central with Mike

RBCC's major event of the season
happened on 6 Nov, 2004.
Over 150 junior and senior
riders competed in the eight
event program starting at
8.30am. A 12 rider Penny Farthing
race was a feature of the programme.

was second in the NSW Elite
Mens Road Championships
on the
weekend (24 Oct 2004) on the
famous Mt Panorama race
circuit in Bathurst.

the Woman's Tandem
Sprint at the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens
(20/9/04). Silver went to Great Britain and Bronze
to USA.
RBCC's Peter
McDonald has shocked
everyone but his club mates
(We all know that he is a
machine) in winning this
years Grafton Inverell
Classic. Peter riding
for the Caravello/FRF Team
won Australia's toughest one
day event. Pete, on
board his beautiful red and
white Argon 18 bicycle and
Velomax carbon wheels (both
club sponsors) covered the
228km race in 6 hours and 43
mins.

gold medalist in the Womens Olympic Road Race, a very special welcome home.
As you know Qantas welcomed home the Athletes in a special hanger and Qantas

Brittany Orr, Silver Medal in the
U19 Women NSW Road Race Championship
Congratulations to Brittany Orr who
took the silver medal in the Women's
U19 road racing championships at
Stanley
Park, East Kurrajong Road, East
Kurrajong, on Sunday 22 Aug
2004. The girls had to do two
33km laps or 66km in total.
Congratulations to Gold medalist
Amanda Spratt of the Penrith
Panthers club. Brittany and
Amanda worked together and pulled
some three minutes on the peleton.
Amanda attacked on the second lap
and was able to get away some 20
seconds on Brittany. It was a
fabulous ride by Brittany.

RBCC/FRF's ROBBIE CATER IN ITALY FOR JUNIOR
WORLDS
Robert "Robbie" Cater,
pictured left at the Randwick Botany Junior Open
on 17 July 2004, is over in Italy training for
the Junior World Road Racing championships late
September.
Bit of Drama last weekend
with 2 riders falling in front of Robbie during
a non-championship race in Italy. Robbie
went over the top of the downed riders and
fortunately did not injure himself beyond some
grazing. However his beloved cycle was
destroyed. Apparently, they have managed
to get Robbie another bike. Information is
sketchy and more on this story as it comes to
hand. In the meantime, we are all pleased
that Robbie is uninjured.

A Great day was had by all at Heffron
on 1 Aug 2004 at the Waratah Vets
races. A good turn up of

Buckton competing in A grade.
Congratulations to Pat Naughton
who won the A grade event and to
Rocky Fortuna for a great third
place in B grade.
Brittany Orr, U19 Women NSW
Individual Time Trial Champion
Congratulations to Brittany Orr who
took the gold medal in the Women's
U19 ITT at Calga on 25 July 2004.
Brittany's time of 36:16.90 would in
fact was the second fastest women's
time of the day with the winner of
the Elite Women's event Zoe
Southwell posting a time of
36:02:04. Congratulations also
to third place getters in the
Women's event our Athen's
ParaOlympian hopefuls Janelle
Lindsay and Lindy Hou on their
tandem! Congratulations to
Robbie Cater who took Bronze in the
U19 Men's division. Josh
Marden was 6th in the U23 Men and
Peter McDonald was 8th in the men in
a time of 1:02:43.53. Peter
Milostic FRF Couriers won the Mens
divison with an incredible time of
58:34.77, a full 2 minutes ahead of
the Silver Medalist.

RBCC/FRF's ROBBIE CATER SELECTED FOR JUNIOR
WORLDS
Robert "Robbie" Cater is
pictured left at the Randwick Botany Junior Open
on 17 July 2004 being congratulated by Randwick
Councillor Robert Belleli. Both Robbie's
Club Randwick Botany and his sponsor FRF
Couriers are very proud of the fact that Robbie
has been selected as part of an eight member
Australian junior team to contest this year's
World Road Championships in Italy (September
28-October 3) The team will be coached by Liz
Hepple and her assistant, Paul Brosnan, and
consists of the following riders:
Male: Matthew Goss (Tas),
Robert Cater (NSW), Simon Clarke (Vic), Patrick
Shaw (Vic), Andrew Wade (WA).
It was a great day for both Randwick Botany Cycling
Club and FRF Couriers when Chris "Spongee" Jenkins
of the Randwick Botany Cycling Club, and a member of
the FRF Couriers team, took out the
Keegan Downes 105km
Handicap Race
Coonabarabran to Gunnedah on Saturday 10
July. Working with Matt Lucas who was also in
the 7 minute bunch, the pair systematically caught
all the bunches off before them and actually put
time into bunches chasing them. It was a
fabulous ride. Congatulations also to Matt Lucas who
finished second to Spongee giving Randwick Botany
one, two in the event. RBCC also had a
spectacular day 2 taking out Division 3 and 4.

We are all very proud of
RBCC's own Janelle Lindsay who has been selected by the
Australian Paralympic Association to represent
Australia at the Athens Paralympic Games, September
17 - 28 September. The team includes 11 cyclists,
five of whom will be competing in their first Games.
Janelle will partner vision impaired rider, Lindy
Hou. Janelle and Lindy are in top form
which is a fantastic achievement given that Janelle
was seriously injured by a collision by a car last
August which left her with shocking injuries such
including fractures in her shoulder, hip,
pelvis and vertebrate in her back. With that kind of
determination an Olympic medal is almost guaranteed.

Congratulations to RBCC's Josh Marden and RBCC/FRF
Couriers Chris Jenkins who placed first and
third respectively in the
Mark Dwyer 100km
Handicap Race - Mudgee on Saturday 3 July.
Josh and Chris were both in the 8 minute bunch
which were able to hold off the scratchies.

Third Round Club Championships Dunc Gray Velodrome.
About 30 RBCC riders had a fabulous morning on
Sunday 4 July 2004. Many of us met at
Centennial Park and then rode up as a group to the
Dunc Gray criterium circuit which has been
constructed on the grounds of the Dunc Gray
velodrome. Their was plenty of action as the various
grades negotiated the sharp corners around the tight

Congratulations to our medalists, Silver for
Robbie Cater in the U19 Men's and Bronze to Josh
Marden in the U23 Men's division. Everyone
who competed, whilst not all in the medals, had
fantastic rides. Chris Spongee Jenkins had
an unbelievable gutsy ride with he and Nick Wood
of the FRF team working hard and chasing down
breaks which ultimately assisted fellow FRF team
member Jose
Rodriguez in winning the Elite Men's division
and coming second overall. It was quite a
sight to see Chris Jenkins, Matt Lucas, Josh
Marden, Pete MacDonald, Jerzy Sowa, Saxon Johns,
Dave Gardner and Aaron Castles in a field of 120
plus riders. In the Masters 2-3, Mark "Slapper"
Robertson, Pat Naughton and John Hadley all had
a fine ride whilst in the Masters 4-5, Neil
Morris and I flew the RBCC flag. Michael
Murdoch also had a really gutsy ride in the
Men's U19 which I'm sure assisted Robbie Cater
into his silver medal placing. I hope I
have not missed anyone who competed. A
thoroughly enjoying days racing and I recommend

Fresh from his second overall
placing at the Wagga Motors Open 120km Handicap
on 29 May 2004, Robbie won the first 120
kilometre road race
as part of the
Mooball 2 day tour on Saturday 5 June
2004. Moonball is a National selection
event so Robbie must have got the selectors a
little bit interested. Congratulations
Robbie and congratulations to Robbie's sponsor
FRF Couriers. Congratulations also to Robbie's
coach Alex Fulcher who was voted in as President
of Cycling New South Wales last Wednesday night.

TOUR
Congratulations Tom Paton for winning the St
George 2 Day Junior Tour in the under 15 Men's
division. Tom won the Individual Time
Trial and was narrowly beaten in the crit by
eventual overall second place getter, Matthew
Guillan from the Southern Cross club. Tom is
pictured left being just beaten in the sprint by
Matthew. RBCC team mate Luke Davison
cruised in for third place.

Congratulations to FRF sponsored riders, Robert
Cater and Chris Jenkins who both won Bronze
medals at the NSW Criterium championships at
Dunc Gray on Saturday 22 May 2004. Robbie
placed third in the U19 Championships and Chris
placed third in the U23 championships. A
number of other Randwick Botany riders competed

Congratulations to
Dave and Sandie Mackey who were married at a lovely ceremony
in Centennial Park on Saturday 24 April. (Now you know
why half the Executive were absent from racing). After
the wedding ceremony, we all adjourned to the reception for
a fabulous evening at the Le Sands at Brighton. What
do cyclists do on their honeymoon, you might ask. Well
they get on their bikes and ride the beautiful Great Ocean
Road. That's what Dave and Sandie are doing anyway.

NATIONAL MASTERS
MEDALISTS FOR 2004
Congratulations to Chris White,
Roger Crawford and Liam Kelly who were all medalists
in the 2004 National Masters Championships.
Liam was second in the Masters 2 road race.
Roger Crawford placed 3rd in the Masters 3 road
race. Chris White received 2 bronze medals for
the Masters 5 sprint and 500m time trial at the
track.
Congratulations to all
those who competed including Crisping Arnell and
John Buckton on the track. Mark Robertson in
the road events.

FUTURE RBCC CLUB MEMBER BORN 13 APRIL 2004
Alexander James Mackay,
was born at 4.30 am on 13 April 2004. Alexander
weighed just 1.6 kg or 3.5 pounds. He and mum are both well. Left,
Alexander is pictured with proud dad, Ross. Alexander should
be home in about two weeks when he has fattened up a little. (Click on image for larger view)

Edmundson
The members and Executive of the Randwick
Botany Cycle Club are saddened to announce the death of
member John Edmundson. John was a fantastic bloke,
always happy and helpful. John was much liked by all his
club mates. Our deepest condolences are extended to
John's wife Judy, son Jamie, and family.
John
was only 39 years old when he died suddenly on April
6, two days after competing in the Snap Ironman
Australian triathlon, on April 4, 2004 in Forster-Tuncurry.
Some 400 of John's relatives and friends farewelled
John at his funeral service at The Holy
Family Catholic Church, 214 Maroubra Rd. Maroubra on
Thursday April 15, 2004. Following
prayers a cortege left for the Eastern Suburbs
Crematorium.

2003.
Congratulations to Chris White who has been voted the New
South Wales Cyclist of the year for 2003 by Cycling NSW.

RBCC JNIORS
EXCEL IN NSW TRACK, MOUNTAIN BIKING & TRIATHLON
Adriano Maradini competed in the NSW Junior
State Track Championships - Dubbo earlier this month and
achieved a 3rd place in the U13 Men's Scratch race bringing home
a Bronze medal.
At the recent NSW Inter-schools MTB
championships March 11- 14, two RBCC Juniors achieved
excellent results. Tom Patton came first in the Division 3
(years 7 & 8) four cross, first in the downhill and second in
the Cross Country and was winner of the King of the mountain.
Tyron Bicknell, competing in Division 2 (years 9 & 10) came
second in the four cross, second in the downhill and second in
the King of the Mountain.
Two Randwick Botany members, Brittany Orr &Tamas Bykerk,
competed in this year's 2004 NSW All Schools Triathlon. Tamas Bykerk competed in the under 14
age group of the 2004 NSW All Schools Triathlon at the
International Regatta Centre. The distance for the race was a
450m swim, 12 km cycle and 3 km run. Tamas placed 3rd overall.
This placing has ensured his selection for the NSW Combined High
Schools Team to compete in the Nationals held in Perth early
April 2004. Brittany Orr won the U19 Women's Division and
is this year's State Champion in the event.

NEW STATE CHAMPION FOR 2004
Congratulations to new Masters 5 State
Individual Pursuit Champion, Chris White. Three RBCC
members competed in the NSW State Masters Track Championships at
Dunc Gray Velodrome on 13 & 14 March. Chris White winning
Gold in the Pursuit, Silver in the Sprint and Bronze in the 500
Time trial. John Buckton won Bronze in the Pursuit, Bronze
in the 500 Time Trial and Bronze in the Scratch race.
Crispin Arnell, in his return to the track after an absence of
"many" years, performed well also.

2 NEW NATIONAL CHAMPIONS FOR 2004
Luke Davison (left) is the 2004 National Mens U15, 250 metre
Time Trial Champion. Luke, representing New South
Wales at the National Junior Track Championships in Tasmania
on March 5 to 8, took gold on day one of the competition in
a time of 23.3 seconds.
Patrick Jones (pictured right) is
the new National Penny Farthing Champion. The Championships
were held at Evandale, Tasmania, where they have been held
for the past 22 years, on Saturday 21 February 2004.

LUKE
DAVISON. FIRST RANDWICK BOTANY STATE CHAMPION FOR 2004.
Congratulations Luke
Davison. Luke won the gold medal in the 500 metre time
trial and the sprint in the U15 Mens State track titles held at
Dunc Gray Velodrome on 7 Feb 2004. Luke went on to get the
Silver medal in both the Individual pursuit and the Scratch race
on the second day of competition. Well done Luke !!
Luke has been selected as part of the State
Team to compete at the National Championships from the 5th
to 8th March in Launceston.
