REPORT

Overcast skies and windy conditions greeted over 80 junior riders from around the state to the annual Randwick Botany Cycling Club Junior Open Carnival at Heffron Park on Saturday 14 May 2005.  Spurred on by the success of Aussie riders like Robbie McEwen in the Giro d'Italia, young stars of the future competed in a series of scratch, points, handicap and elimination races.

The premier U17 Keith Harris Memorial Elimination Trophy Elimination Race provided some exciting racing in the all-in event.  Riders started together and the last 2 riders at the end of each lap were eliminated from the race.  The surviving riders in finishing order were Richard Lang (Colnago-Caravello), Luke Davison (Randwick Botany/FRF Couriers) and Nicholas Spratt (Penrith Panthers).

Dale Scarfe from the Central Coast Cycling Club rode strongly is all his races, winning the U17 A-Grade 20km event and placing second in the U17 A-Grade Point score.

Chloe Hosking from the Canberra Cycling Club stayed with the boys and was the first girl home in the U17 B-Grade 16km race.  Hosking also finished third in the mixed U17 B-Grade Point score.

The best Randwick Botany/FRF Couriers Cycling Club rider of the day was Luke Davison who was on the podium for two of his three races.  Davison finished second in the U17 Elimination race, third in the U17 A-Grade 20km event and fourth in the U17 A-Grade Point score.

The annual junior carnival Matthew Bosch Memorial Prize award was presented to U13 rider Caleb Ewan from the Southern Highlands Cycling Club.  The Matthew Bosch Memorial Prize is presented to the gutsiest rider in the U13 races.  The award is in memory of Matthew Bosch who died in 1995 from cancer, aged 11 years.  Matthew could only ride a fixed gear bike with training wheels because of an intellectual disability, but he showed great love and determination for his riding.  The award was presented by Matthew’s mother Tanya Bosch.

Randwick City Councilors Robert Belleli and Bradley Hughes enjoyed the junior racing and made several presentations to place getters.

All riders where presented with a box of Kellogg’s K-Time Bars, kindly donated by Kellogg’s who supported the event.

Randwick Botany Cycling Club conducts criterium racing at Heffron Park, Maroubra each Saturday afternoon.  Juniors: 12.30pm, Seniors D and E Grade: 2.00pm and A, B and C Grades: 3.00pm. Report from our Junior Support Officer, Janette Murdoch

Dear All,

RBCC Junior Open was held on the weekend (Saturday 14 May), it was a great day mainly due to the support of some wonderful volunteers, especially grateful for those who are not involved in the junior programme but still managed to give up their Saturday to help out,  particularly wish to thank Anna Fortuna who worked tirelessly all day in the canteen, plus baked some wonderful treats the night before for canteen sales, Julia Guinan who came down for the early set up and stayed all morning helping out with the registration table and marshalling, Bebe Laurence who helped out with the Commissaires, my husband Mark Murdoch who helped set up early in the morning and then spent all day marshalling at the netball courts.  Big thank you to the Paton & Bykerk families, Jennifer & Emma Jones for their time, as neither of their sons/daughter raced due to injury but still managed to give us some time.

Also like to give a big thank you to the Club Executive for their tireless efforts throughout the day and in the planning leading up to the day, John & Joanne Buckton, Fred & Helen Vella, Chris White (for his great job on the PA) Tony Horneman & Richard Jenkins & Dale Rockelle, Rocky Fortuna.

Also grateful to the parents of the riders entered in the days events for the assistance & other club members who gave us a hand with the marshalling (Warwick McAlpine, Roger Jowett, David Reed, Andy, Stephen Price (who happened to turn up for senior racing and found himself Marshalling, sorry about that Stephen).  Hope haven't missed anyone but if I have please accept my gratitude for your help so big  THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO CONTRIBUTED TO THE SUCCESS FO THE DAY.

Arrivederci presto

Janette
