REPORT
Glorious weather greeted over 80 junior
riders from around the state to the annual Randwick Botany Cycling
Club Junior Open Carnival at Heffron Park on Saturday 17 July 2004.
Spurred on by the success of Aussie cyclist in the Tour de France,
including Robbie McEwan, our young stars of the future competed in a
series of scratch, points, handicap and elimination races.
The premier U17 Keith Harris Memorial Elimination Trophy Elimination
Race provided some exciting racing in the all-in event. Riders
started together and the last 2 riders at the end of each lap were
eliminated from the race. The surviving riders in finishing order
were Matthew Pettit (Parramatta), Matthew Wild (Southern Cross), Dale
Scarfe (Central Coast) and Ben Trojko (Penrith Panthers).
|
 |
The U15 12km scratch race start resembled the
start of a Formula 1 motor race, with Matthew Guillan (Southern
Cross) blasting off the front with the rest of the bunch in hot
pursuit. Guillan, Luke Davison (Randwick Botany) and Tom Patton (Randwick
Botany) formed a 3-man breakaway. Tamas Bykerk (Randwick Botany)
was caught in no-mans-land but dug deep to catch the break to
fight out a close sprint. Davison crossed the line first,
followed by Guillan, Patton and Bykerk. |
| |
|
|
 |
Randwick Botany Team tactics came into play in
the U15 Point Score over 16km with Davison and Bykerk doing
absolutely no work in assisting the chasing peleton to catch team
mate Tom Patton. In an unbelievable disply of fitness and
determination, Tom stayed away for the entire race, earning
most of the points and finishing 1000m ahead of the other riders.
Tom was building on his lead every lap and had the race continued
he would probably have lapped the field. |

|
 |
A special award was presented in the U13
Points Score race, which was won by Jack Bennett (Southern
Cross). The Matthew Bosch Memorial Prize was presented to Kirsty
Mills from the St George club for being the gutsiest rider in the
race. The award is in memory of Matthew Bosch who died in 1995
from cancer, aged 11 years. Matthew could only ride a fixed gear
bike with training wheels because of an intellectual disability,
but he showed great love and determination for his riding. The
award was presented by Matthew’s mother Tanya Bosch. |

Randwick City
Councillor Robert Belleli enjoyed the junior racing and made
several presentations to place getters. Councillor Belleli is
pictured left congratulating the the winner of the Mens U15 Point
Score race and current National U15 Men's 250 time trial champion,
Luke Davison. Cycling NSW Vice-Presidents Bruce Mills and
Geoff Barrett were also present to see the young riders in action. |

All riders where presented with a box of
Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain breakfast cereal
and a box of K-time bars, kindly donated by Kellogg’s who
supported the event. A huge thank you
has to be extended to Parentini bike ware
and Cheeky Monkey cycles who both assisted the event by way of
cash sponsorship. |

Our race Commentator & Commissaire, Mr Chris
White intoduces U19 Junior rider Robert "Robbie" Cater to the
crowd. Robbie's Club Randwick Botany, his sponsor FRF
Couriers, not to mention his coach Alex Fulcher, President of
Cycling NSW, are all extremely proud of the fact that Robbie
has been selected as part of an eight member Australian junior
team to contest this year's World Road Championships in Italy
(September 28-October 3). Finally something brought a smile
to Robbie's face. |
| |
|
|
 |
Robbie was also congratulated by Councillor Robert Belleli on
behalf of Randwick Council.
The team will be coached by Liz Hepple and her
assistant, Paul Brosnan, and consists of the following riders:
Male: Matthew Goss (Tas), Robert Cater (NSW),
Simon Clarke (Vic), Patrick Shaw (Vic), Andrew Wade (WA).
Female: Natasha Mapley (Tas), Hannah Banks (Qld),
Amanda Spratt (NSW). |
