REPORT

Glorious weather greeted over 80 junior riders from around the state to the annual Randwick Botany Cycling Club Junior Open Carnival at Heffron Park on Saturday 2 August 2003.  Spurred on by the success of Aussie cyclist including Bradley McGee in the Tour de France, our young stars of the future competed in a series of scratch, points, handicap and elimination races.

The premier U17 Keith Harris Memorial Elimination Trophy Elimination Race provided some exciting racing in the all-in event.  Riders started together and the last 2 riders at the end of each lap were eliminated from the race.  The surviving riders in finishing order were Gregory Beer (Penrith Panthers), Fabio Calabria (Canberra), Keegan Aitchison (Southern Cross) and Christopher Guillan (Southern Cross).

The U17 Scratch Race was conducted over 18km and was won by Gregory Beer following by Christopher Guillan, Keegan Aitchison, Fabio Calabria, Blake Field (St George) and Quinn Seymour (Canberra).  Camden Howard from Central Coast rode strongly.  Keegan Aitchison and Fabio Calabria won the sprint primes.

Dale Scarfe from Central Coast lapped the field in the U15 Point Score race over 16km.  Scarfe scored the highest points followed by Luke Davison (Southern Cross),  Pita Vea (Randwick Botany), Matthew Guillan (Southern Cross) and Tom Patton (Randwick Botany).

Skye-Lee Armstrong from Parramatta was the star of the Women’s U17 Scratch and Points Races and also won the sprint primes.  Other placegetters included Jaclyn Kejda (Illawarra), Rebecca Wilcox (Hunter District), Courtney Ross (Southern Cross) and Gabrielle Cass (Lidcombe Auburn).

A special award was presented in the U13 Points Score race which was won by Alex Carver (Lidcombe Auburn) followed by Jack Bennett (Southern Cross), Christopher Treloar (Hunter District), Scott Law (Illawarra) and Adriano Maradini (Randwick Botany) and Melinda Potente (St George) on equal points.  The Matthew Bosch Memorial Prize was presented to Parisse Ross from the Southern Cross club for being the gutsiest rider in the race.  The award is in memory of Matthew Bosch who died in 1995, aged 11 year, of cancer.  Matthew could only ride a fixed gear bike with training wheels because of an intellectual disability, but he showed great love and determination for his riding.  The award is sponsored by Matthew’s mother Tanya Bosch.

Randwick City Council prepared Heffron Park and the 2km circuit.  All riders where presented with a box of Kellogg’s Sustain breakfast cereal and a box of K-time bars, kindly donated by Kellogg’s who supported the event.

Also thanks to Ernie Smith from Ernie Smith Photography for taking some great photos.  You can see all Ernie's photos of the day by clicking here.
